About GPA/MD, Inc.

GPA / MD, Inc. is an all volunteer organization founded in 1985 by Betty Rosen and dedicated to finding responsible, loving homes for retired greyhounds and younger dogs that can't make the grade at various tracks throughout the country--resulting in an early retirement. GPA / MD's goal is to let people know what excellent and loving pets these gentle, retired racers make.

About GPA/MD Greyhounds

Greyhounds adopted through the GPA program usually range from two to five years of age (some younger and some older). The life expectancy of ex-racers is twelve or more years. Retired racers are very intelligent, adaptable dogs who fit easily into their new home environment following a brief adjustment period. They are eager to please and respond positively to any attention given them; they become quickly attached to their new families. The majority of retired track greyhounds are quiet, clean, good-natured and gentle dogs that adapt and get along with children and with other animals. They do not require a great deal of space, and are usually quite content to curl up on a soft dog bed.

A greyhound requires about the same amount of exercise as any dog their size. They should be walked, on a leash, a moderate distance three or four times a day unless there is a fenced yard. You and the dog will develop a pattern that is satisfactory. They make superb jogging companions, as long as they are kept on a leash. Greyhounds stand between 26 and 29 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 80 lbs. depending on sex. They come in many colors: black, white, several shades of brindle, fawn, blue, red or a combination of these colors.

There is a $225.00 adoption fee for all GPA/MD, Inc. greyhounds. Some of the services the fee my help to defray are transportation, boarding, and veterinarian services (all greyhounds receive e xamination, shots, fecal check, bath, flea & tick dip and  are heart worm negative when placed with their new owners.) All greyhounds have been spayed or neutered prior to adoption. A care booklet and a nylon safety collar and a six foot lead is provided. GPA greyhounds are transported from various locations and sources. GPA/MD, Inc. assigns a representative to assist you in acclimating your new greyhound.
